Soundtrack to Your Summer

06-01-17 | Summer Fun

  1. “Summer Nights” – Olivia Newton John and John Travolta

Any movie fanatic with even the slightest twinge of nostalgia would instantly hear this song belting out in their head right about now. What could be more perfect to pair with this classic musical than a Family Date Night with the kids in the park? Wychwood Barns and Dufferin Grove both host movie nights as well as the Christie Pits Film Festival. Check out more here: https://christiepitsff.com/

  1. “Saturday in the Park” – Chicago

This 1972 jam pairs perfectly with High Park’s famous “Shakespeare in the Park” fest. This year marks the 35th anniversary of one of our city’s most beloved theatrical events. Grab some sandwiches and a blanket and spend a romantic evening under the stars with the one of the greatest storytellers in history. This year you can enjoy the madcap comedy of mistaken identity Twelfth Night (or What You Will), or delve into the divided kingdom of King Lear, one of the most monumental works of English drama – re-imagined from a female perspective. 1. “Nightswimming” – E.M.

One of the best joys of summer (whether you’re an adult or a child) is a late night swim. Quiet, calm and relaxing or splashing, squealing and smiling – either way it is summer heaven. Many city pools have extended hours to satisfy your nighttime itch, including the Alex Duff Memorial Pool at Christie Pits and the Giovanni Caboto Outdoor Pool in Earlscourt Park. 1. “Wipeout” – Beach Boys

Ready to get a little dirty and wipeout? Join one of the Toronto Beaches’ Summer Volleyball leagues and get moving! Registration for the Ashbridges Bay tournament closes June 26th so hurry here to register: http://ashbridgesvolleyball.com. Looking for something more laid back? Checkout the nets at Wychwood Park for a less competitive match.

  1. “Summer of ‘69” – Bryan Adams

One of Canada’s greatest exports, this staple summer tune is a must have for every playlist. Roll down the windows, put on your shades, and sing along on your way down to the Molson Canadian Amphitheatre or the Harbourfront Centre for some incredible live music. This summer the Amphitheatre boasts artists such as John Legend, Peter Frampton & Steve Miller Band, Arkells, Kings of Leon, and Chicago, The Band & The Doobie Brothers.

  1. “Summer Girls” – LFO

If you’re a city-dweller who spends most of the summer hitting the pavement in search of the best patio you know that people watching is an urban favourite. Our city is full of fantastic patios to do just that and it has no shortage of Summer Girls and Summer Boys to watch while you sip on a cold brew or a sunny mimosa. The Rushton’s patio is always a top spot for some uptown foot traffic. Other favourites are Allen’s backyard oasis on the Danforth and The Black Bull on bustling Queen Street.

Whatever tunes you’re playing, make sure to turn up the volume and enjoy every last bit of this summer. Get outside, get dirty, get wet, get some sun. In no time those gorgeous leaves will be turning and we’ll be sipping lattes and tea but for now it’s nothing but ice-cream and cocktails.
