New Year, New House

01-08-21 | Homeowners

There’s a certain point in December when the mind shifts from the chaos of the holidays and begins to zero in on the New Year. Those first few weeks of the New Year are filled with ambitious lists and a fresh batch of energy to tackle those mountains you built up over the year. Most of us focus on our health, finances, or business when we think of New Year’s Resolutions. And all the while our home sits there beside us tap, tap, tapping its fingers, waiting for us to notice its flabby arms. This year, we’ve designed the perfect workout for your home. We’ll help you warm up with some light cardio, then a bit of heavy lifting (you’ll thank us tomorrow), and end with some stretches. Ready to get fit?

Warmup

Deep inhale, let’s start our warmup with a walkthrough of your home inside and out. Go through every room and make notes on everything that needs to be fixed or even just refreshed. Don’t forget the front and back yards and your driveway (any loose paving someone could trip on?) Even the smallest details, maintained over time, will keep your house fit and feeling fab. Change the filters in your furnace, cover your AC, and turn off all your hoses. Feeling warm?

Strength Training

Now it’s time to do some heavier lifting. Make you sure you have a set of light (cleaning) and heavy (service & repairs) weights by your side, you’ll need them both for this exercise. It’s time to sculpt your home’s shoulders; clean out your eavestroughs,  tile grout touchpoints, and do small paint touch ups along the way instead of repainting the whole room later. Now set those aside and grab your heavy weights. Almost nobody does this step, and everyone should if they want to avoid costly surprises down the road. Your roof and your furnace should be checked by a professional once a year. Yes, these are the toughest reps in the workout so get them done and out of the way. Having your furnace cleaned and serviced could prevent your motor dying out, and having your roof inspected before the snowstorms arrive can uncover small issues before they become Niagara Falls in your bedroom ceiling. Build up the relationships you need with the professionals you trust who will help keep your core strong and fit for years to come.

Cool Down

The hard work is done! If you do this short maintenance workout for your home regularly your space will feel fresh, tidy, and tight and it will stay in shape for many years to come. Just as with any New Year’s Resolution or health kick, if you fall off the wagon – it keeps going! So if you’re thinking of skipping just one workout, remember that you’ll end up having to do that workout plus get rid of the 20lbs you gained along the way. Now you can sink into a deep, relaxing stretch knowing that your home’s health is under control.
